RAL Paint - What, When & How

What is Ral and what does it stand for?

RAL is a coding system to define colors, The system was developed in 1927 in Germany
It stands for ReichsAusschuss für Lieferbedingungen.

The difference between Ral Classic & Ral Design

RAL CLASSIC colours have a 4 digit colour code the range consists of more than 200 colours

RAL DESIGN has been developed for professionals such as architects.  It contains 1688 colours arranged in systematic order.  This range has a 7 digit colour code.

When and why are Ral colours used?

In 1927 the German Reichs-Ausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung invented a collection of colours under the name of RAL 840 so that manufacturers and customers could rely on a code to describe the colour they wanted, prior to this they would have had to exchange samples to describe the colour, The Ral system has evolved since then now containing Ral Classic, Design & Effect ranges.

You may have noticed the recent increase in homes being fitted with grey windows this colour is commonly Ral 7016
Ral colours are also used for identification such as pipe work i.e

Gas - Ral 1004
Fire - Ral 3000
Compressed Air - 5012
Combustible Liquid - 8001
Acid - 4001
Water - 6010
Steam - Ral 9006
